ABOUT PAIN TO PERFORMANCE
Pain Relief Sessions
What are you waiting for? Start today!
When you scheduled your session, you will receive a confirmation with instructions for where we are located and how to dress.
You will also receive a link to copy and paste into your browser for the online health history form. Please fill it out 48 hours prior, so we have ample time to review it and plan for your session.
As you fill out the form, take your time and think of things that may be contributing to your pain, injury, sports performance, or anything else. All treatment is personally customized for you.
Please bring or wear gym or yoga clothes for your session. If it is not fitted, it should expose your legs and arms to see bony landmarks.
Not all, but most sessions include some forms of posture assessments, static/movement assessments, functional muscle testing, evaluation, stretching, movement therapy, neurological bodywork, and homework. Being dressed appropriately will allow the session to run more smoothly.
Depending on what type of therapy you will be receiving, very few sessions require you to be completely undressed or under draping. Most of the massage-bodywork techniques offered are done wearing gym-yoga clothing.
Also, most sessions are dry sessions, meaning we rarely use lotion and oil unless needed. At this time, <3% CBD Chaba is used in the clinic on adults only. Please do not wear jeans, skirts, or clothing that you cannot move in. Your therapist does have sheets for draping if it is necessary for you to disrobe.
Note: Appropriate gym wear is loose shorts, yoga shorts, fitted yoga leggings, jog bra, tank top, or T-shirt. If we deem it necessary for you to get undressed, we have sheets and blankets for that, but many sessions can be performed with gym clothes on and are much more effective depending on what we are doing.
If you are coming in for post plastic surgery – post-surgery and receiving mild lymphatic drainage, depending on what you have had done, we will have you probably disrobe and go under the sheets, but please have gym clothing in case.
If you are a Lipedema patient and have had liposuction, your compression garments will remain on per the latest science and your surgeon’s directions.
If you are receiving instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization or decongestive cupping therapy, we may have you disrobe and go under the sheets depending on where and what we do. Again, please have appropriate clothing.
If you are scheduling a wellness relaxation treatment, we may or may not have you disrobe depending on what we do, so please have appropriate gym clothing.
Static, Movement, and Palpation Assessments
In addition to the diagnosis or recommendations contained in your referral, we always utilize our own performance tests or assessments to make certain that we are offering you the best quality of care.
These tests will help us feel and see the dysfunctional movement restrictions in your body, so we know what to begin with and where to go. Depending on what type of session we are doing, some have more, and some have less or none.
Functional Muscle Testing
When we test your muscles, we are not testing for strength, power, or endurance. We are testing for function.
Testing is done lightly and helps us determine if your muscles are functioning properly or being inhibited or facilitated by other muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, organs, scars, tattoos, eyes, jaw muscles, hyoid muscles, diaphragm, pelvic floor, and or other body systems which could be causing you pain, unresolved injuries or sports performance issues.
This is extremely important for numerous reasons. First, tight muscles do not always need to be released or stretched. Ask us about this in your session.
Second, releasing a compensatory muscle (something for which we are certified to test) but not activating the paired inhibitor, will end up with a vicious cycle of recurrence. Activating an inhibited muscle without releasing the compensatory will cause the under-functioning muscle to get functionally weaker.
Also, we may use an indicator muscle to test with. This allows us to see the function of items we cannot muscle tests, such as emotions, lymph, ligaments, scars, organs, hyoid muscles, eye muscles, and more.
Neuro Therapy Localize Stimuli and Manual Therapy
This is where we combine the magic of what we have learned from your health history, assessments, and muscle testing.
Based on this understanding, we will apply a therapy stimulus to your nervous system that connects one or more of your body systems to your brain such as your emotional system, lymph, nervous, vascular, endocrine, organs, muscles, and possibly your tendons, ligaments, and fascia with the local area symptom or complaint.
Through this process, we can tap into the connections between the overactive and underactive elements in your body. When connections are addressed and treated, you will feel quick and lasting results.
When the process is complete, we will release the overactive and activate the underactive through different massage and bodywork techniques.
Rehabilitative Movement Therapy
Rehabilitative movement therapy happens after we assess, test, evaluate, release, and activate. This will be your homework, and we will show you how to do it.
Often, dysfunctional patterns are stored in your motor control. Rehabilitative movement therapy will help you to stop overusing the overactive and start using the underactive.
The homework normally takes only 10 minutes and is done 2x’s a day and is amazingly easy, so there is nothing to worry about.
If you are a new client and have never heard of this, it’s understandable. Most therapists don’t offer this type of work. This detailed approach to pain management and recovery requires extensive education. However, the results speak for themselves.
Of course, the effectiveness of this therapy depends on your willingness to do the homework and keep regular appointments. Appointment frequency depends on the dysfunction and how much pain you are in.
If you are greater than a 3 pain level, we recommend a weekly visit, since it is unlikely we can address the whole body in one session. Follow-up visits are to verify your homework was done correctly, and that the rehabilitative exercises are working.
We recommend focusing on no more than 1 to 3 areas per session because the motor control can only handle so much change and controls all movement patterns. Once we get through the whole body, you will go into maintenance, and appointments will be based on need. 1-4 per month is suggested.
The most important thing is to keep an open mind as it is vastly different from traditional massage and bodywork.
We promise to do our best to get you feeling better in as few sessions as possible. Some clients achieve this faster than others. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We look forward to working with you.
